OVPDEI Overseas Studies and Scholarship Program (OVPDEI) and the College of Arts and Sciences International Office (the College) invite College faculty members to apply for a program to design and implement new, interdisciplinary summer study tours with OVPDEI students in mind. The College/OVPDEI expect to select four faculty participants for this program.
The program will provide faculty:
Faculty training (in-person and online) and opportunities to brainstorm with like-minded peers
Administrative and logistical support to run the program both on campus and overseas
A platform to run the program in the summer of 2023 or 2024
Proposals must be for credit-bearing programs abroad that carry 3 College credits. The course will constitute a new program offering in OVPDEI and will run as one of its custom programs in the summer of 2023 or 2024. These standalone summer programs are typically two weeks of study abroad with six weeks of pre-travel lectures during the spring semester. The study abroad program will be open to students in Hudson and Holland Scholars Program, Groups Scholars Program, and 21st Century Scholars Program. Successful applicants will serve in the capacity of faculty director of the international study tour. These study tours will contribute to IU’s strategic plan to diversify the overseas destinations, academic subject matter, and participant profile in study abroad programs.
Full-time IUB faculty (TT and NTT) who have their primary appointment in the College of Arts and Sciences spanning the three divisions and three schools are eligible to apply. Participating faculty members will need the express support of their departments.
Interested faculty can request to meet with the College/OVPDEI for a consultation session to discuss their ideas for the study tour development application.
The consultation meetings run anywhere between 30 minutes to one hour and will happen on Zoom. Please send an email to oescue@iu.edu with a consultation request.
Consultation: Recommender before submitting the application form Application Deadline: January 5, 2022 Faculty Training: Starts in February 2022 Program Development: February – December 2022 Student Recruitment: December 2022 - January 2023 and December 2023 - January 2024 Program Execution: Summer 2023 or Summer 2024
Faculty who wish to apply for this program will first need to have a consultation with program staff. Then, to apply for the program, faculty must include the following documents in the proposal:
Narrative statement that describes the course, the international experiential component, and addresses the selection criteria outlined below (max three pages)
Outline of a syllabus
Curriculum vitae
Letter of endorsement from a department chair or other appropriate office. The letter should indicate how the program would connect with departmental goals
Four faculty members will be selected for the Study Tour Development Program based on the following selection criteria:
The academic quality of the proposed course
Feasibility of international component
Ways in which the program differs from existing overseas study programs
Ways in which the program connects to OVPDEI’s priority topics of diversity, issues of social justice and responsibility, multiculturalism, cross-cultural understanding, race, cultural heritage, and/or human rights
Faculty member’s experience working with URM students and experience with international activity
Study abroad destination
Applicants are encouraged to creatively present how the international component will be integrated into the course while explaining the educational rationale behind choosing a particular location. Preference will be given to programs that travel to non-traditional locations, are connected with OVPDEI’s topics, and have the potential to grow into an annual offering.
The College/OVPDEI will work directly with the faculty to write and submit a study abroad program proposal to IU Overseas Study Advisory Council (OSAC) before recruiting, advertising, or scheduling the proposed program.
